Nigerian police in Lagos have detained UK-based blogger Maureen Badejo after petitions were filed against her by two prominent Nigerian clergymen: Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries and Dr. Daniel Olukoya of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM).
Badejo was taken into custody on Friday and is being questioned by the Cybercrime Unit in Yaba. While official details of the allegations remain undisclosed, the arrest is linked to her online publications and social media activity.
This development follows previous legal conflicts between Badejo and the clerics. In March 2022, a UK court dismissed a defamation suit brought by Apostle Suleman against Badejo and ordered him to pay her £19,601 in costs. Badejo later declined Suleman's proposal to settle the amount through monthly installments.
Separately, in December 2023, a former MFM pastor, Sunday Olowoyeye, filed a lawsuit against Dr. Olukoya, accusing him of unlawful arrest and detention. Olowoyeye claimed his troubles began after he shared his account with Badejo, who published the allegations. Badejo’s platform has since featured several individuals making accusations against both church leaders, none of which have been publicly addressed by the clerics.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the grounds for Badejo’s arrest.
