Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has announced her intention to run for governor of Ogun State in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former senator and commissioner made the declaration during an interview on Eagle7 Sports Radio, hosted by football legend Segun Odegbami, stating that her political focus is now solely on the governorship race.
Obasanjo ruled out returning to the Senate or her former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasising a deliberate shift in her political journey. “The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship… and we have started that journey. We are going to see it through,” she stated.
She confirmed that she recently joined the APC after persistent calls from supporters who had urged her to return to active politics. According to Obasanjo, a group of supporters had been mobilising for two years and formally approached her a year ago to convince her to run.
Her entry into the Ogun State governorship contest is expected to intensify the political landscape ahead of 2027. As a former federal lawmaker and commissioner in the state, her candidacy could significantly influence the dynamics within the APC and the wider race for the governorship seat.
