US Lawmaker Warns Against Separatist Agendas, Says Destabilizing Nigeria Would Empower Terrorists

U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore has cautioned that efforts to promote separatist movements in Nigeria could worsen the country’s insecurity and increase risks for Christian communities.

In a statement on social media platform X, Moore revealed he recently conducted a fact-finding visit to Nigeria, where he met with government officials, church leaders, aid groups, and displaced persons to assess reports of religious persecution.

“In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country has not come up in any serious way,” Moore stated. “Efforts to embolden separatists hurt Christians in Nigeria — especially in the North and Middle Belt.”

He warned that destabilizing Nigeria would strengthen terrorist groups and undermine safety for Christians across the region. “A destabilised Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” he added.

Moore highlighted the recent security cooperation agreement between the United States and Nigeria as a positive step toward addressing violence and strengthening bilateral relations. He reiterated his commitment to supporting all Nigerians affected by terrorism.

During his visit, Moore also met with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing insecurity in the Middle Belt.
