Ex-Israeli Air Force Chief Warns of Far Graver Threats, Says Hamas Attack Was a "Preview"

A former commander of the Israeli Air Force has warned that future conflicts will dwarf the October 7th Hamas attacks, predicting that Israel and other militaries face an unprecedented wave of AI-guided drones, cyber warfare, and sophisticated missile barrages for which they are currently unprepared.

A senior retired Israeli military official has issued a grave warning that the nation's future security threats will make the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, and Iran's missile barrages look like a "limited preview."

Retired Air Force commander and former Defense Ministry director general Amir Eshel delivered the stark assessment at a recent defense technology summit in Tel Aviv. He stated that the coming years will introduce conflicts of a "far more severe" and complex nature, driven by a new generation of weaponry.

According to a report by The Times of Israel, Eshel detailed a battlefield saturated with threats that exceed current military countermeasures. He specifically highlighted the rapid proliferation of stealth drones guided by artificial intelligence, advanced electronic warfare, directed-energy weapons, and large-scale, simultaneous cyber and physical attacks on civilian and military infrastructure.

"Without immediate and decisive action, the country risks being overwhelmed in the opening hours of the next war," Eshel cautioned.

To meet this challenge, he called for a urgent national effort to develop and mass-produce cost-effective, "good enough" offensive and defensive systems that can be deployed quickly and at scale. He noted that while global demand for advanced security solutions is growing, private investment remains hesitant due to past volatility in the defense tech sector.

The warning from the former commander signals a significant shift in strategic thinking within Israel's security establishment, framing the recent, traumatic conflict not as a peak event, but as a precursor to a more dangerous and technologically advanced era of warfare.
