A 20-year-old man has died after being savagely beaten by relatives, including his uncle, who accused him of stealing ₦150,000—money that was later found, proving the young man's innocence.
A tragic case of mob justice and mistaken accusation has ended in the death of a young man in Ogun State. Jamiu Oseni, 20, succumbed to his injuries after a brutal assault carried out by his uncle and other relatives over an alleged theft of ₦150,000 ($300 approx.) in Idowa, Odogbolu Local Government Area.
According to family accounts, the incident began when Jamiu's uncle asked him to accompany him to their farm. Upon arrival, the uncle claimed that a sum of ₦150,000 he had kept in his motorcycle was missing and immediately accused Jamiu. Despite Jamiu’s denial, the uncle summoned others, tied him up, and initiated a violent beating.
The situation escalated further when the men reportedly sent the women away from the farm, alleging they intended to perform a “traditional ritual.” Jamiu was then beaten with what relatives described as charms. After the assault, the uncle took Jamiu to a police station to report the alleged theft and demand his arrest.
At the station, Jamiu collapsed. Bystanders attempted to revive him with water, but he began convulsing. He died en route to the hospital. Relatives reported his body was covered in blood.
In a devastating postscript, the allegedly stolen ₦150,000 was later found, confirming that Jamiu had been innocent all along.
Jamiu’s mother, Modupe Oshikoya, recounted that her son had helped his uncle with chores earlier that same day. She stated that an herbalist had been summoned to the scene but, despite the practitioner’s findings and Jamiu's pleas, the beating continued.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident is under investigation, as authorities work to identify and prosecute all individuals involved in the attack.
