Following US Strikes, Nigerian Air Force Expands Offensive, Destroys IED Factory in Zamfara

In a significant escalation of military pressure on militant groups in northwestern Nigeria, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has conducted a targeted airstrike to dismantle a major improvised explosive device (IED) manufacturing hub in Zamfara State. The operation comes just days after US Africa Command (AFRICOM) launched precision attacks on terrorist enclaves in neighboring Sokoto State.

The dual-phase mission, executed on Sunday by the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, focused on two high-value targets in Tsafe Local Government Area.

Phase One: Dismantling a Command and Control Hub

The first strike targeted the Turba Hill enclave, a key logistical and operational base for bandits. Acting on sustained intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), NAF assets identified a specific zinc-roofed structure central to the group's activities. A precision-guided munition destroyed the building, with subsequent battle damage assessments confirming the site's obliteration and the neutralization of several fighters present.

Phase Two: Crippling Bomb-Making Capabilities

The second and more critical strike hit Kachalla Dogo Sule’s Camp, a notorious stronghold confirmed as a primary IED factory. These homemade bombs have been frequently used in ambushes against security forces and civilians along the volatile Dan Sadau–Magami axis. The airstrike reportedly triggered massive secondary explosions and intense fires, indicating the destruction of a large cache of explosives and precursor materials, severely degrading the militants' ability to manufacture these deadly weapons.

A Coordinated "Blockade Strategy"

The Zamfara operation builds directly on the momentum of the Christmas Day AFRICOM strikes in Sokoto, which targeted ISIS-linked Lakurawa cells using long-range drones. Military analysts see this as a coordinated "blockade strategy," where international and domestic forces apply sequential pressure to deny terrorist and bandit groups safe havens and logistical support across the interconnected Sahelian corridor.

In a statement reaffirming its commitment, the NAF emphasized its role within the broader joint efforts of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, aimed at restoring lasting peace to the restive North-West region. This latest action signals an intensified and potentially more integrated air campaign against the region's complex web of armed groups.
