Kano Hisbah Cracks Down on "Good Evening Girls," Arrests 9 in Anti-Prostitution Raid

The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested nine individuals in a targeted operation against suspected prostitution, exposing what authorities describe as a practice where wealthy men pick up young women on the streets.

In a special year-end enforcement drive, the moral policing agency apprehended eight young women and one man on Friday night across several major streets in Kano, including Zoo Road, Ahmadu Bello Way, and Sultan Road. The suspects, locally referred to as "Good Evening Girls," were detained for activities the board says violate the state's Shari'ah law.

A Specific Method of Operation

Detailing the operation, the Board's Deputy Commander General, Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, outlined the alleged method. "These young girls are usually picked by wealthy individuals who take them to places they want, have fun with them and give them money ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦30,000," he stated.

Aminuddeen reported that the arrested girls, whose ages range between 15 and 20, confessed to being involved in the trade for some time. He issued a stern warning that the Hisbah would sustain its crackdown and urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children's upbringing to prevent such social vices.

Enforcement and Broader Context

Following the completion of investigations, the suspects are set to be charged in court. This operation underscores the active role of the Hisbah Board in regulating public morality in Kano, often leading to arrests for offenses under Islamic law. While the focus remains on legal enforcement, the situation also highlights the underlying socio-economic pressures—such as poverty and lack of opportunity—that can drive young people into sex work, even as authorities pursue punitive measures to stamp it out.
