A mortician in Edo State has been arrested after being accused of removing vital organs from a corpse in his care.
The incident occurred at a mortuary on Akugbe Street in Benin City. The family of the deceased made the gruesome discovery while preparing for his burial. According to reports, they noticed a strong odor and, upon closer inspection, found that internal organs had been removed and replaced with cellophane.
Enraged by the discovery, family members and a crowd vandalized the mortuary. Other families with bodies stored at the facility quickly removed them.
A video circulating online appears to show the corpse with a chest incision and cellophane material inside.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrest, stating that the mortician was taken into custody following a distress call. An investigation into the incident is now underway.
