The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced it will prosecute popular TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, known as Peller, for reckless driving after he crashed his vehicle while live-streaming an emotional breakdown.
In a strong statement, the FRSC labeled Peller's actions as dangerous and irresponsible, emphasizing that "social media fame does not exempt anyone from road traffic laws."
Details of the Offence and Official Response
The Lagos State Sector Commander has been directed to initiate formal proceedings against the influencer. Peller will face charges for:
* Reckless driving
* Distracted driving
* Use of a mobile phone while operating a vehicle
The charges stem from an incident where Peller was live-streaming, visibly distressed, and threatening to harm himself while driving on a Lagos highway. He subsequently lost control and crashed, damaging the vehicle. The footage of the crash went viral, sparking public outcry.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed serious concern over a growing trend of celebrities and content creators flouting traffic rules for online content. "Public roads are not stages or studios," he stated.
A Call for Responsibility from Influencers
The FRSC urged entertainment associations, actors' guilds, and influencer networks to actively promote responsible conduct among their members. The agency stressed that celebrities hold significant influence, especially over young Nigerians, and their actions should model safe behavior rather than endanger lives.
The corps reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic laws for all road users, regardless of their social status, as part of its mission to reduce accidents and fatalities on Nigerian roads.
