Sheikh Gumi Advocates for Education Over Military Action in Response to US Airstrikes

Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has publicly criticized recent US military airstrikes in northern Nigeria, calling for investment in education and social services instead.

Gumi’s remarks came in response to a widely circulated social media video showing a Fulani herder near an unexploded missile fragment believed to be from a US strike. He highlighted the herder’s apparent unawareness of the danger as evidence of widespread ignorance—a problem he argues should be addressed through schools, not bombs.

The cleric stressed that many herding communities lack access to basic education and amenities. He proposed that the substantial cost of military action—citing a single bomb priced around $2 million—should be redirected toward building schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. Such investment, Gumi contends, would reduce violence and misunderstanding more effectively than force.

“Most herdsmen need deliverance from ignorance and themselves, not bombardment,” Gumi stated. “That’s why I built a school for them. Instead of dropping a $2 million bomb that can build schools and amenities for them.”

Gumi reaffirmed his longstanding commitment to educating herders, describing it as a sustainable path toward lasting security and development.
