In a significant early engagement following his appointment, Nigeria’s newly posted Ambassador to the United States, Kayode Are, participated in the inaugural session of the US-Nigeria working group on Thursday in Abuja.
The high-level strategic dialogue was convened in direct response to the recent redesignation of Nigeria as a "Country of Particular Concern" (CPC) by the administration of former President Donald Trump—a label underscoring severe religious freedom violations.
The timing of the meeting carried added diplomatic weight, as it coincided with the official announcement from the Presidency confirming Are’s ambassadorial posting to Washington, D.C. This placed the new envoy at the heart of bilateral discussions from the very outset of his tenure.
Leading the Nigerian delegation was the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who was joined by a cohort of the nation’s top security chiefs. The United States delegation was headed by Allison Hooker, Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Under Secretary of State.
During the talks, both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to a strengthened strategic partnership, with a focused agenda on combating shared threats.
Key priorities discussed included defeating terrorism and banditry, enhancing national security architectures, and deepening intelligence and operational collaboration. The dialogue marked a concerted effort to align strategies and address mutual concerns, signaling a proactive step toward mitigating the issues highlighted by the CPC designation.
