Anambra Police Dismantle Child Trafficking Ring, Rescue 33 Underage Girls

The Anambra State Police Command has uncovered and shut down a child trafficking syndicate operating from a compound in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, rescuing 33 underage girls in the process.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, followed an intensive investigation into kidnapping, abduction, and child trafficking cases across the state.

According to a statement released by the Command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu stormed the premises, arresting one suspect—37-year-old Ifeoma Success Anthony—and securing the release of the girls.

Among those rescued were three teenagers—Divine Mbam (14), Nwagu Favour (15), and Oke Blessing (18)—who had been abducted in Ebonyi State on September 26, 2025. Their whereabouts were traced to Emma Pigin Road in Aguleri, leading police to the Awkuzu hideout.

Preliminary findings indicate that the property was allegedly used as a hub for child trafficking and prostitution. The purported owner, Mrs. Ngozi Nnanyelugo (45), remains at large, though police say efforts to apprehend her are underway.

Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full scope of the criminal network and identify other individuals involved.

The Anambra State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives, particularly those of vulnerable children, and encourages the public to continue providing useful information to support law enforcement efforts.

This recent bust follows a similar operation in October 2025, when police rescued a newborn and arrested four suspects in connection with child trafficking in the same local government area.
