MAIDUGURI – Suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed five people, including a church pastor, during a Thursday evening assault on Tarfa community in Borno State’s Biu Local Government Area.
The attack began around 7:00 p.m., as militants on motorcycles entered the village, firing sporadically and setting homes and shops ablaze. The assault reportedly lasted for two hours before the attackers withdrew.
Most Reverend John Bakeni, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State, confirmed the casualties in a statement Friday. Among the dead is Pastor Musa Umaru of the Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN) church, who had resided in the community for more than ten years.
“The entire village was razed, and vehicles were burnt,” Bakeni said, lamenting the destruction.
Local sources, who requested anonymity, described a scene of devastation that forced dozens to flee. “It was a devastating attack. They stormed the community en masse and set houses ablaze, including shops and a church,” one eyewitness stated.
Residents expressed frustration over the lack of immediate security intervention during the raid and called for urgent government action to protect villages near the Sambisa Forest fringe. “We are under threat,” one displaced resident appealed. “We need the intervention of the Federal and State governments to save lives and property.”
