A violent land dispute between two communities in Ebonyi State has resulted in the deaths of four people, three of whom were beheaded, according to the state police command.
The clash occurred on January 29 in Okporojọr village, Oso Edda community in Edda Local Government Area, when individuals from Ndukwe community in neighboring Afikpo LGA reportedly launched an attack.
Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu confirmed that three victims were beheaded during the assault, while a fourth later died from injuries sustained. The attack also involved the burning of mud houses, damage to a church building, and the destruction of harvested rice.
In response, Commissioner of Police Adaku Uche-Anya ordered a large deployment of tactical squads to the area. Ten suspects have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru condemned the violence, describing it as “barbaric” and a “flagrant disregard for the sanctity of human life.” He directed security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and urged affected communities to avoid reprisals.
The police have restored calm to the area and say security presence will be maintained until the situation is fully resolved.
