Dele Giwa: Federal Government Seeks Extension to Appeal Court Order for Reopening of Murder Probe

The Federal Government has filed a motion at the Court of Appeal in Abuja seeking an extension of time to appeal a February 2024 judgment that ordered the reopening of investigations into the 1986 murder of journalist Dele Giwa.

Giwa, the founding editor-in-chief of Newswatch Magazine, was killed by a parcel bomb at his Lagos residence. The ruling, delivered by Justice I.E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court, was issued in a suit brought by the Media Rights Agenda (MRA), which also cited the unresolved killings of several other journalists.

In its motion filed on December 23, 2025, the government, represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation, stated that the 90-day statutory period to lodge an appeal had lapsed. It expressed its desire to challenge the judgment and indicated that a draft notice of appeal had already been prepared.

The case highlights the long-delayed pursuit of justice for Giwa and other journalists whose murders remain unsolved nearly four decades later.
