Euracare Hospital Denies Negligence in Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son

Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has formally responded to allegations made by celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie regarding the death of her young son at their facility, denying that medical negligence played any role in the tragic outcome.

In a statement signed by the hospital’s management, Euracare extended “deepest sympathies” and “heartfelt condolences” to Adichie and her family, acknowledging the “profound and unimaginable loss” of a child.

However, the hospital firmly contested the author’s public account. “We find it necessary, for the record, to clarify that some of the reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies. In particular, the suggestion that this tragic outcome resulted from medical negligence is erroneous,” the statement read.

The hospital described itself as a “reputable centre for complex medical care,” staffed by an internationally trained clinical team. It stated that Adichie’s son, who was “critically ill,” had been referred to Euracare after over a week of treatment at two other paediatric centers. According to the hospital, care was administered “in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards,” including the use of sedation where “clinically indicated.”

The statement noted that despite collaborative efforts with external medical teams and the provision of “all necessary clinical support,” the child passed away less than 24 hours after arriving at the facility.

Euracare confirmed that it has initiated an internal investigation in line with clinical governance standards and committed to engaging “transparently and responsibly” with any formal inquiries.

The hospital emphasized its commitment to “compassion, patient safety, and the responsible handling of this matter,” while requesting respect for the family’s privacy and the due process of investigation.

The response marks the first official reaction from the hospital since Adichie’s emotional public account detailed her belief that her son’s death was caused by overdosed sedation and a lack of proper monitoring during a routine procedure.
