FG to Install CCTV Cameras on All Federal Highways, Says Minister Umahi

The Federal Government has announced a comprehensive plan to deploy Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, solar lighting, and dedicated security patrols on all completed federal highways nationwide.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, made the disclosure over the weekend while introducing enhanced engineering standards and stricter deadlines for road projects, particularly in the Southeast region. He stated that the initiative is designed to ensure maximum security and rapid emergency response on major roads.

"Any completed federal highway will have CCTV, solar lights, and dedicated security vehicles. Our response time to incidents will not exceed five minutes," Umahi said.

The minister also revealed that the Federal Executive Council has approved a ban on all mining activities within a 10-kilometer radius of bridges across the country. This will be enforced through coordinated patrols on roads, bridges, and adjoining waterways.

Umahi commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to resolving long-standing road challenges in the Southeast, noting that contractors are making significant progress on key routes like the Enugu-Onitsha Highway.
