Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed her desire to serve as a positive role model for young girls, emphasizing the need for tangible examples in an era she says is marked by envy and online misinformation.
Speaking on Thursday at the inauguration of the “Sen. Oluremi Tinubu Dream Centre,” an Information and Communication Technology facility at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Tinubu reflected on the importance of mentorship and representation.
“All along, I have been thinking that I should be a case study for young girls,” she said. “They talk about the girl child all the time, but nowadays people no longer have role models.”
Tinubu pointed to the influence of negative narratives online, stating, “We live in an age where, even when people are doing well, out of envy, many untrue things are said about them on the internet. And our young people do not really see many people to emulate.”
She shared her own childhood dream of becoming a teacher—a goal she later achieved—and encouraged young people to nurture positive aspirations. “Whatever you will become has already been deposited in you by God,” she advised.
The newly inaugurated center, built through a collaboration between the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the National Information Technology Development Agency, includes a storytelling room where Tinubu’s life journey will be shared. She noted that the facility is open to both boys and girls and will house a small library with free and accessible reading materials.
In his remarks, NITDA Director-General Kashifu Abdullahi described the center as a hub for digital technology, artificial intelligence, and historical storytelling designed to preserve legacies and inspire future generations.
Oba Ogunwusi praised the First Lady’s commitment to education, while the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Adebayo Bamire, thanked all partners for the development initiative.
