Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the former transitional president of Burkina Faso, has been arrested in Togo and expelled over allegations of plotting to destabilize his home country, according to multiple sources.
Damiba, a former lieutenant-colonel who came to power in a January 2022 coup only to be overthrown eight months later, was detained in Lomé last week. He was reportedly charged with "attempted destabilization" before being escorted to the airport for expulsion, with indications he may be returned to Burkina Faso.
The current military junta in Ouagadougou, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has previously accused Damiba of organizing multiple coup and assassination attempts against Traoré and other officials.
As of Monday evening, Burkinabè authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the arrest.
The incident highlights the ongoing instability and internal power struggles within Burkina Faso’s military leadership since the 2022 coup cycle.
