Gospel Singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, Known for Hit Song ‘Omije Ojumi’, Dies After Illness

Popular Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known for her inspirational hit “Omije Ojumi,” has passed away after a prolonged health battle.

Her death was announced on Tuesday in a statement shared on Instagram by fellow gospel artist Ayo Melody on behalf of the family. The singer died in a Lagos hospital on January 12, 2026.

The statement read, “With great sadness we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”

The singer had been publicly struggling with a severe leg ailment for several months. In October 2025, a video circulated showing her at a church service in Ibadan, where a pastor prayed over her visibly swollen leg. During the service, the cleric described her condition as a persistent bleeding caused by a spiritual attack, referring to it as an “arrow” and praying against the “spirit of death.”

In the footage, an intravenous (IV) cannula was visible on her hand, indicating she was receiving medical treatment at the time.

A Life Devoted to Music

Bunmi Akinnaanu began singing at the age of 10 and later left a banking career to pursue gospel music full-time. She rose to national fame with “Omije Ojumi,” a song that resonated deeply within the Nigerian Christian community and became a worship staple in churches and homes across the country.

She followed this success with other uplifting tracks, including “O Ti Sure,” sustaining a music career built on faith and inspiration.

Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and colleagues mourning the loss of the beloved gospel minstrel, whose voice brought comfort and hope to many.
