Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has provided insight into Victor Osimhen’s fiery on-pitch exchange with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Mozambique at AFCON 2025.
Speaking on SuperSport after Nigeria’s 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria, Ighalo confirmed he spoke with Osimhen following the incident. “I spoke to him after the game, and he told me exactly what Lookman said that made him react that way,” Ighalo said.
He advised the Napoli star to handle such disagreements privately in the future. “I told him next time not to react that way and that it’s better to sort things out in the dressing room, which they did. They are friends now.”
Ighalo attributed Osimhen’s reaction to his intense passion for the national team. “You cannot fault his dedication. The young man wants to perform, and sometimes passion shows in ways people might not expect.”
He also drew a comparison with global star Cristiano Ronaldo, noting that while such emotional moments are common in football, Osimhen holds a unique stature in the Nigerian squad. “We have seen Ronaldo do that, but Victor is not Ronaldo in the Nigerian team; he is the biggest player.”
Despite the earlier tension, Osimhen delivered a standout performance against Algeria, scoring one goal and assisting another in Nigeria’s controlled 2-0 victory.
Ighalo praised Osimhen’s professionalism and focus, emphasizing that his drive and commitment will be crucial as Nigeria prepares to face Morocco in the semi-finals.
“Victor wants to give his best for Nigeria. That’s why he reacts sometimes. But once he’s calm, focused, and motivated, there’s no stopping him,” Ighalo concluded.
