Iran’s Supreme Leader Blames U.S. for Protests as Unrest Continues

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has called for national unity while warning that authorities will respond firmly to ongoing nationwide protests, which he blamed on the United States and other foreign adversaries.

In a televised address on Friday, Khamenei accused demonstrators of acting on behalf of “enemies” seeking to destabilize the country, specifically pointing to former U.S. President Donald Trump. “His hands are stained with the blood of Iranians,” Khamenei stated.

The protests, now entering their second week, began on December 28 in response to mounting economic hardship and the sharp depreciation of Iran’s currency, the rial. The demonstrations have since grown in size and intensity, drawing participation from shopkeepers, students, and citizens across several cities.

Authorities have sought to suppress dissent through widespread internet blackouts and disruptions to phone networks, a tactic frequently employed during previous periods of unrest. Despite the communications restrictions, social media footage verified by activists shows protestors chanting anti-government slogans, blocking streets with burning debris, and clashing with security forces.

The unrest has turned deadly, with reports indicating dozens of protesters and at least four security personnel have been killed in recent days. Hardline factions within the government have signaled no tolerance for dissent, framing the demonstrations as “terrorist actions” instigated by foreign intelligence services.

While President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for restraint and urged officials to address legitimate grievances, Khamenei’s remarks underscore a hardening official stance that prioritizes security over dialogue.

Adding another layer to the political tension, Reza Pahlavi—the exiled son of Iran’s last monarch—has publicly encouraged Iranians to continue protesting. While his statements may have helped sustain momentum, U.S. officials have reportedly ruled out endorsing him as a potential successor should the current regime face collapse.

As chants of “Death to America!” echoed during Khamenei’s speech, the deepening crisis highlights a nation grappling with economic pain, political repression, and rising public anger—with no clear resolution in sight.
