In a decisive move against terrorism, Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has ordered the demolition of suspected terrorist hideouts in Okene Local Government Area.
The operation began with the destruction of a structure identified as a suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) base in Sambel, Idoji, following a spate of banditry attacks in the region.
Background of Extremist Activity in the Area
The demolition comes amid rising concerns about extremist infiltration in Kogi. Months earlier, prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi alleged that a significant number of terrorists operating in Kogi and the South-West were indoctrinated Ebira youths. More recently, the alleged mastermind behind the Deeper Life Bible Church attack in Okene, identified as an Ansaru terrorist group leader, was rearrested and arraigned, further highlighting the security threat.
Security sources indicate these developments point to a growing presence of extremist networks in the area, necessitating a robust government response.
Government's Firm Stance on Security
The state government has vowed to continue rooting out all criminal elements to restore peace and stability. This demolition exercise is part of a broader strategy to disrupt terrorist logistics, deny safe havens, and deter future attacks in Kogi State.
