Kwara State Pastor Dies in Tragic Fire Accident

ILORIN, Kwara State – A 73-year-old pastor, identified as Awolola, died on Monday after a fire he started on his property spread out of control.

The incident occurred around noon along Cemetery Road in the Irewolede area of Ilorin.

According to a statement from the Kwara State Fire Service, the pastor was burning undergrowth on a fenced plot of land containing an unfinished building. The fire quickly intensified, blocking the only gated exit.

Spokesman Hassan Adekunle explained that the victim attempted to escape by climbing the perimeter fence but was overcome by the advancing flames.

Firefighters responded promptly, containing the blaze and preventing damage to neighboring properties. The victim's body was recovered and handed over to a community representative.

The Director of the State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, expressed sorrow over the incident and issued a stern warning against the dangers of bush burning, especially during dry, windy weather. He urged the public to use safer land-clearing methods and to contact fire authorities immediately in case of an outbreak.
