The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its affiliate unions in the Federal Capital Territory to continue the ongoing strike by workers of the FCT Administration, despite a court order directing the suspension of the industrial action.
In a circular dated January 27, 2026, and signed by its Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, the NLC reaffirmed its earlier directive for workers to sustain and intensify the strike until all their demands are met.
The circular stated, “We hereby reaffirm and reinforce the directive to all affiliate unions in the FCT to not only proceed with the ongoing action but to intensify and sustain it until all workers’ demands are fully addressed.”
Outstanding grievances cited by the NLC include unpaid wage awards, promotion arrears, non-remittance of pension and National Housing Fund deductions, and alleged intimidation of workers. The NLC described these issues as “grave, unacceptable, and incompatible with the principles of fairness, justice, and decent work.”
The directive comes a day after Justice Emmanuel Subilim of the National Industrial Court in Abuja ordered the suspension of the strike, ruling that once a trade dispute is referred to the court, any ongoing industrial action must cease pending a determination of the case.
Meanwhile, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, warned that striking workers who fail to resume work following the court order would face consequences, stating that “the law must take its place.”
The NLC has called for daily solidarity sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. across the FCT and warned that any withdrawal from the strike at this stage would encourage further violations of workers’ rights.
