Ile-Ife, Nigeria – The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, performed ancient spiritual rites on Friday to seek divine guidance and national renewal for Nigeria as part of the 2026 World Obatala Festival.
Clad in traditional white regalia, the monarch led high priests in prayers, libations, and invocations at the Obatala Holy Temple. The ceremonies, held during the festival's Oshoosi Day observances, called upon Olodumare (the Supreme Being) and Yoruba ancestors for peace, moral clarity, and unity across the nation.
A Call for National Direction and Justice
In a statement released by his palace, the Ooni emphasized the spiritual significance of the deity Oshoosi, who symbolizes precision, direction, and righteous victory.
“Oshoosi represents precision, direction and victory in righteous pursuits. In invoking Oshoosi today, we are calling for clarity of purpose for Nigeria, successful pursuit of justice, and triumph over forces that threaten peace and unity,” the Ooni stated.
He prayed specifically for the country’s leadership, security forces, and youth, asking for wisdom in governance, strengthened institutions, and a renewed sense of purpose among young people.
Reconnecting with Ancestral Values
The Ooni stressed that such observances are vital channels for restoring societal balance and reconnecting with core Yoruba virtues of justice, truth, and communal living.
He encouraged Nigerians of all faiths and ethnicities to embrace the moral lessons embedded in the festival, noting that the principles of purity, fairness, and uprightness represented by Obatala are urgently needed in national life.
Global Gathering in the Cradle of Yoruba Civilization
The 2026 World Obatala Festival, which runs from January 14 to 27, has drawn devotees, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and the global diaspora to Ile-Ife, regarded as the spiritual birthplace of the Yoruba people. The festival serves as a major platform for preserving cultural heritage while fostering dialogue on ethics and moral leadership in the modern world.
