Police Neutralize, Recover Suspected Military Missile in Niger State

The Niger State Police Command has safely recovered and rendered inert a suspected unexploded military missile, following a prompt response to a public alert in Mashegu Local Government Area.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the operation began after residents of Zugurma community reported sighting a strange, missile-like object in a local forest on Monday afternoon, January 5.

Acting swiftly on the report from the Ibbi Divisional Police Officer, officers cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. The State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, then mobilized the Command's Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit to the scene.

Led by CSP Mohammed Mamun, the specialist EOD team arrived early on January 6. They successfully secured the device, which was identified as a military-grade unexploded ordnance (UXO), and transported it to the State Police Headquarters in Minna for further analysis. The origin of the device remains under investigation.

CP Elleman commended the vigilance of the community and assured the public of their safety, noting that security agencies are actively working to maintain normalcy. The police have pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses.
