The Nigerian Presidency has issued a statement regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s brief stumble during an official ceremony in Turkey, assuring the public that the President is in good health and has since resumed his duties.
In the statement released on Tuesday, the Presidency attributed the incident to a "poorly laid blue carpet" at the event venue in Ankara. Officials emphasized that Tinubu has no underlying medical conditions and remains fully engaged in his official schedule.
“President Tinubu has since resumed his official duties. He is currently engaged in a bilateral meeting with Turkish authorities, after which a press conference will be held,” the statement read.
The incident occurred earlier in the day during a welcome ceremony hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄźan. Video footage showed President Tinubu momentarily losing his footing while walking alongside his host. He was promptly assisted by aides and security personnel and continued with the proceedings without further interruption.
Public stumbles by world leaders often attract significant media attention and can spark speculation about their health and fitness for office. President Tinubu, who has faced questions about his health in the past, has maintained a demanding travel and work schedule since taking office. The Presidency’s swift clarification aims to dispel concerns and refocus attention on the diplomatic objectives of the state visit, which centers on security, defense, and economic cooperation with Turkey.
