President Tinubu Greenlights Major Economic Projects for Ogun State

In a significant announcement on Thursday, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved two major economic initiatives for the state: the commencement of commercial oil drilling and the revival of the long-delayed Olokola Deep Seaport.

Governor Abiodun made the disclosure while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, at his office in Abeokuta.

The governor stated that the President has authorized oil drilling operations at Eba, in the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. Additionally, the multibillion-dollar Olokola Deep Seaport project, stalled for years, has been approved for immediate take-off.

“Mr President has approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling operations at Eba,” Governor Abiodun said. He emphasized that this would drive economic inclusion for coastal communities. Regarding the seaport, he noted, “Our proposed Olokola Port, which has been on the drawing board for several years, is now back on the table.”

The port project, now designated the Blue Marine Economic Zone, is seen as a critical solution to decongest the ports in Lagos. The governor shared that President Tinubu has directed that construction should be significantly advanced within the next year.

Governor Abiodun also commended the Nigerian Navy for establishing a Forward Operations Base on strategic Tongeji Island. He noted this presence would secure the area against infiltration from the neighbouring Republic of Benin and support the new economic activities.

In his remarks, Rear Admiral Mustapha confirmed that the naval outpost on Tongeji Island is being upgraded to a Forward Operations Base due to the area's recognized oil potential. He stated that his visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Navy and the state government to safeguard national borders and prevent criminal activity.

The governor concluded by expressing confidence that Rear Admiral Mustapha’s leadership would enhance security and progress in Ogun State.
