A fresh outbreak of violence between rival cult factions in the Ijora Badia area of Lagos State has left one person dead and residents in fear, marking the latest episode in an ongoing cycle of retaliatory attacks.
The victim, identified only as Orji, a member of the Aye cult group (also known as Akamaye Boys), was killed on Monday afternoon during a confrontation with members of the rival Eiye confraternity (Obale Boys). According to eyewitness accounts, the clash erupted when suspected Aye members entered the Obale neighborhood in what appeared to be a retaliatory move, only to be met by armed Eiye members who had anticipated the attack.
The confrontation turned violent, with gunfire forcing the Aye group to retreat. Orji was reportedly struck during the exchange and later pronounced dead.
This incident is part of a prolonged and violent rivalry between the two groups that began in Orile Iganmu in 2025 and has since spread to surrounding communities, including Ijora Badia. The conflict has been marked by repeated cycles of revenge attacks. Violence previously flared during a cultural festival in Orile Iganmu last November, resulting in several casualties, and again in early January 2026.
Tensions escalated over the weekend when suspected Eiye members allegedly attacked the wife of an Aye member in the Akamaye area, injuring her before she received medical treatment.
Although police intervention reportedly prevented a clash earlier on Monday, the groups regrouped hours later, leading to the fatal encounter.
Local sources indicate that neighborhoods like Obale and Akamaye have increasingly become refuge points for cult members fleeing violence, raising security concerns for law-abiding residents.
At the time of reporting, the Lagos State Police Command had not released an official statement, though security presence in the area is said to have been increased to prevent further violence.
Community leaders and residents are urging authorities to take decisive action against cult activities, warning that the continuous violence not only endangers innocent lives but also destabilizes public order and safety across affected communities.
Authorities continue to appeal to youths to reject cultism, emphasizing that such rivalries only bring destruction to individuals, families, and the broader society.
