A heartbreaking incident at a deteriorating primary school in the Federal Capital Territory has claimed the life of a dedicated educator, highlighting critical infrastructure failures.
Abaji, FCT – The head teacher of the Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School in Jamigbe community, Abaji Area Council, has died after being bitten by a cobra within his office. Community leader Chief Aliyu confirmed the tragic event, attributing it directly to the school's dilapidated state.
According to Chief Aliyu, the snake entered the office through a crack in the wall, hiding under a chair. When the head teacher arrived to start his day, the reptile attacked immediately.
"The snake spat venom into his eyes during the struggle," Aliyu stated. The educator was rushed to a nearby hospital in Lambata, Niger State, but was pronounced dead hours later.
The incident has plunged the small community into mourning and fear. Following the attack, local residents found and killed the cobra, tracing its path back through a broken section of the office wall.
A School in Disrepair
Chief Aliyu described the school building, originally constructed through community effort, as being in "total disrepair." He expressed grave concern for student safety, noting that pupils occupy a classroom attached to the same compromised office.
"It is only by God's grace that the children were spared," he said, pointing out the cracked and crumbling walls in the learning areas. The school lacks a proper administrative block, forcing staff to use the vulnerable community-built office.
Praising the late head teacher as a hardworking and committed professional, Chief Aliyu issued an urgent plea for intervention. He called on the LEA to collaborate with the Area Council or the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) to construct safe, adequate classrooms and offices for the school.
