Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Goods Over Possible China Trade Deal

United States President, Donald Trump, has warned that Canada could face severe trade consequences if it enters into a commercial agreement with China, threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian exports to the U.S.

Trump issued the warning via a post on his Truth Social platform, targeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He accused Canada of attempting to serve as a transit hub for Chinese products bound for the American market — a move he said would not be tolerated.

According to Trump, any effort by Canada to act as a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods would be a serious miscalculation. He argued that deeper economic ties with China could have damaging effects on Canada’s economy and society, warning that Chinese influence could undermine Canadian businesses and social stability.

Trump stated unequivocally that any trade deal between Canada and China would trigger immediate retaliatory tariffs, applying to all goods entering the United States from Canada.

This warning comes just days after Trump reportedly withdrew Canada’s invitation to participate in his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative, an international framework aimed at addressing global conflicts.

The withdrawal followed remarks made by Carney at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticised major global powers for using tariffs and economic integration as tools of political pressure.

Tensions were further heightened after Carney paid an official visit to China between January 14 and January 17, during which he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders reportedly agreed to deepen economic and trade cooperation between their countries.

The situation highlights growing geopolitical and trade frictions involving the United States, Canada, and China, as global economic alliances continue to shift.
