Venezuela's Rodríguez Rejects U.S. Transition Plan, Declares Maduro "Only" Legitimate Leader

In a televised address, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez firmly rejected U.S. plans for a political transition and declared that captured President Nicolás Maduro remains the country's "only" legitimate leader.

Rodríguez’s statement directly contradicts U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that she had agreed to cooperate with Washington to facilitate a change in government. Appearing alongside senior officials in Caracas, Rodríguez demanded Maduro’s immediate release and emphasized national sovereignty.

"Maduro is the only president of Venezuela," she stated. "Venezuela will never be a colony of any nation." She expressed openness to diplomatic engagement with the U.S., but only within the framework of international and Venezuelan law.

The address aimed to project unity and continuity within Maduro’s government amid the crisis, countering speculation about Rodríguez’s whereabouts and intentions following the U.S. military operation that detained Maduro.
