Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has returned to Nigeria after nearly five years in exile, marking a significant moment following his removal from the federal government's wanted list.
The activist was hosted on Monday by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan. The visit served as a gratitude call to the monarch, who was instrumental in advocating for Igboho's clearance to return home.
Background of Exile and Royal Intervention
Igboho fled Nigeria in July 2021 after a joint military and Department of State Services (DSS) raid on his Ibadan home, which led to the deaths of three aides and the arrest of thirteen others. The operation was conducted amid his campaign against armed herdsmen in Southwest Nigeria.
He was later arrested at Cotonou Airport in Benin Republic while attempting to travel to Germany and was detained for over a year before his release in March 2022.
His return follows reported interventions by prominent Yoruba monarchs, including the Olubadan, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, who persuaded the federal government to drop charges against him.
Emotional Reunion and Expressions of Gratitude
During the emotional visit, Igboho thanked Oba Ladoja for his steadfast support throughout his ordeal.
"I thank God for knowing Kabiyesi. I am very happy that I met him, not knowing that he would be among those who would help me out of this problem," Igboho stated, acknowledging the critical role traditional rulers played in securing his freedom.
In his response, the Olubadan offered reassurance and counsel. "Where there is life, there is hope. We thank God that you have arrived safely," Oba Ladoja said. He prayed for Igboho and his family and advised him to act with wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and stability.
A New Chapter
The return signals the closure of a turbulent chapter for the activist and his supporters. Igboho's spokesperson, Koiti Olayomi, had earlier confirmed that all arrangements were finalized for his return following presidential clearance.
The homecoming not only highlights the influence of traditional institutions in mediating complex political and security matters but also opens a new phase for Igboho, who remains a symbolic figure in the ongoing discourse over security and self-determination in southwestern Nigeria.
