Anambra Reopens Onitsha Main Market After One-Week Closure Over Sit-at-Home Order

The Anambra State Government has announced that the Onitsha Main Market will reopen on Monday, February 2, 2026, following a one-week closure imposed for the traders’ failure to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, directed all traders to resume normal commercial activities, assuring them of adequate security. The market was sealed on January 26 by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who warned that the closure could be extended if compliance was not achieved.

The commissioner urged traders to ignore threats from non-state actors and encouraged residents to report security concerns to the emergency line 5111. He also reminded civil servants and teachers that the state’s pro-rata salary policy remains enforced, meaning “no work on Monday, no pay.”

Parents were advised to ensure their children attend school on Mondays to avoid sanctions.

The state government has repeatedly moved to end the weekly sit-at-home observance, which continues to disrupt economic and social activities in parts of the South-East.
