Atiku, Makinde Hold Separate Consultations with Babangida in Minna

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday held separate closed-door meetings with former military president Ibrahim Babangida at his residence in Minna, Niger State.

Atiku arrived at Babangida’s home shortly after 1 p.m., followed by Governor Makinde at about 2:10 p.m. Both politicians held individual and joint discussions with the elder statesman, although the specific agenda of the meetings was not disclosed.

Speaking to journalists afterward, Atiku clarified that his visit was focused on strengthening the structures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Niger State and was not related to the 2027 presidential election.

“I am a member of ADC, and we are busy trying to ensure that our structures are firmly rooted from the ward to the state up to the national level,” he stated. “This is not the first time I am coming to see Babangida. I am here to pay my respects. The issue of contesting in the 2027 election did not arise.”

Atiku also used the opportunity to reiterate his support for the electronic transmission of election results, urging opposition parties to unite in rejecting the Senate’s preference for manual transmission in the ongoing Electoral Act amendment process.

He was accompanied by several ADC leaders, including former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and ex-Senator Ben Obi.

Governor Makinde, who remained inside after Atiku’s departure, did not address the press.

The meetings come amid continued political realignments and preparations ahead of the next general elections.
