Bomb Blast Hits Bayelsa Government Secretariat, Suspect Arrested

A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated early Wednesday morning at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, triggering an immediate security response and temporary shutdown of government activities.

The explosion occurred around 6:00 a.m., prompting the Bayelsa State Police Command to deploy its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, Special Drone Unit, and tactical teams to the scene.

Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah, who personally led the operation, confirmed that no lives were lost and no property was damaged. However, a second unexploded IED was discovered during a thorough sweep of the area and safely neutralized by EOD operatives.

Suspect in Custody

Authorities arrested 60-year-old Pentecost Elijah, a resident of Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, at the scene. He is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department and will face prosecution upon conclusion of investigations.

"Let me inform you that the situation is under control and normalcy has been restored. Members of the public are advised to remain calm and continue with their lawful business activities," CP Iyamah assured.

Government Responds with Temporary Closure

As a precautionary measure, the Bayelsa State Government ordered a four-hour work suspension, affecting over 6,000 civil servants. The directive, issued by Head of Service Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, allowed security operatives to complete their investigation and safety protocols.

Access roads leading to both the State Secretariat and Government House were temporarily cordoned off during the operation.

Authorities have confirmed the situation is now fully contained and normal activities have resumed.
