Brothers Machete Sibling to Death Over Family Property Dispute in Anambra

Tragedy struck in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Wednesday after two brothers allegedly hacked their 37-year-old sibling to death during a heated argument over inheritance.

The victim, Onyedika Okpala, was attacked with machetes by his brothers—Okwudili Okpala and Chigbo Okpala—at Umunkwo Village, Ula, Ekwulobia, around 4:50 p.m., according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.

Family sources disclosed that the altercation erupted over disagreements surrounding property sharing and inheritance rights. The suspects allegedly inflicted deep machete cuts on the victim's head, causing him to bleed profusely and collapse unconscious at the scene.

Sister Raises Alarm

The victim's sister alerted the police, prompting a swift response from operatives who rushed to the location. However, the fleeing brothers had already escaped before security agents arrived.

Onyedika was rushed to the General Hospital, Ekwulobia, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician. His remains have been deposited in the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.

Manhunt Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation and intensified efforts to track down the two fleeing suspects.

Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, for official confirmation were unsuccessful as calls to his line were unanswered. A text message sent to him had yet to receive a response at the time of filing this report.

The incident is the latest in a string of violent disputes among family members in the state. In December 2025, a young man identified simply as Chisom was killed during an argument over a phone charger in Ihiala, Anambra State.
