Defence Minister: Coup Plot Officers Knew the Consequences and Are Ready to “Face the Wrath”

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, has stated that military officers arrested for their alleged involvement in a foiled plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government “must have made up their minds” about the consequences of their actions.

In an interview with Turkish broadcaster TRT World, Musa emphasized that the accused would receive a fair trial with legal representation of their choice, while their families would be supported by the government.

The 16 officers—including a brigadier general and a colonel—were arrested in October 2025. The Defence Headquarters initially described the case as one of “acts of indiscipline,” but confirmed on January 26, 2026, that it was in fact a plot to remove the president.

According to military authorities, the conspiracy involved plans to assassinate President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and other senior officials, as well as to detain top military leaders. The plot was reportedly uncovered in late September 2025 through coordinated intelligence from the army, the Department of State Services, and the Defence Intelligence Agency.

Musa noted that while the officers would have considered the risks to their families, the state would ensure their wives and children are cared for.

“The perpetrators already know the repercussion of their action, and I’m sure they are ready to face the wrath,” the Defence Minister stated.
