Ethiopia Demands Immediate Withdrawal of Eritrean Troops

Ethiopia has called on neighboring Eritrea to immediately pull its military forces out of Ethiopian territory, accusing them of an incursion and of collaborating with rebel groups along the northwestern border.

In a letter dated Saturday, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos described Eritrea’s recent actions as “acts of outright aggression” and demanded an end to all support for insurgent groups.

Despite the strong demand, Timothewos expressed hope that diplomacy could still end the “cycle of violence and mistrust” between the two nations.

Eritrea, which gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, has not yet responded to the latest allegations. The two countries fought a brutal border war from 1998 to 2000 and have experienced strained relations in recent years, despite previously cooperating during Ethiopia’s 2020–2022 Tigray conflict.
