FAKE NEWS ALERT: TikToker Mirabil Hospitalised, Not Arrested—Ogun Police Debunk Viral Misinformation

Command PRO confirms alleged rape survivor voluntarily reported case, was taken to hospital after showing signs of instability; warns against spreading false narratives

The Ogun State Police Command has moved swiftly to quash viral social media reports claiming that TikTok user Mirabel—who alleged she was raped in her home—has been arrested for making false accusations.

Contrary to the misinformation circulating online, police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed to reporters that Mirabel was never taken into custody. Instead, she voluntarily visited the police station to report her case and was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical care due to her unstable condition.

The Viral Claim

The confusion began after a narrative spread across social media alleging that Mirabel had been detained by Ogun State police. One widely shared post read: "Ogun State Police have arrested TikTok user Mirabel following investigations into her viral claims of being raped, cut with a blade, and forced to drink poison by an unknown man."

The post further claimed that neighbors reported no signs of forced entry, no screams, and stated she appeared normal when leaving with a man. It also alleged that phone records did not support her story and that she refused full medical and forensic examination .

Police Clarify

Babaseyi categorically dismissed these claims, providing a clear timeline of events.

"That is false. She was not arrested. She came to report her case at the police station. After establishing communication with her, she was taken to the hospital so that she can get admitted," the PPRO explained .

He emphasized that due to Mirabel's condition, formal interrogation has not been possible. "She is not really stable as expected. She was taken to the hospital and currently undergoing treatment. The police did not arrest her. She is not stable for us to question her. That is the situation of things," Babaseyi said .

Background

Mirabel had sparked widespread concern after posting a series of videos online detailing an alleged assault that occurred in her home on February 15. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) initially acknowledged the case and confirmed it was working to reach her, later clarifying that all relevant information had been passed to Ogun authorities, as the case fell outside its jurisdiction .

Warning Against Misinformation

The incident highlights the dangers of unverified information spreading rapidly on social media, potentially causing harm to vulnerable individuals and undermining genuine cases of sexual assault. Police have urged the public to rely on official statements rather than unconfirmed social media posts.

As Mirabel remains hospitalized, receiving the care she reportedly needs, authorities continue their investigation—this time, with the added challenge of combating misinformation while seeking truth.
