Solomon Dalung, former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, has declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) possesses the political strength and depth to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Dalung argued that overcoming the incumbent would depend on a united opposition front rather than any single individual's ambition. He expressed strong belief in the caliber of seasoned politicians within the ADC, which has become a coalition platform for several major opposition figures.
“I believe we have many people who can challenge President Tinubu,” Dalung stated. “I can even decide to contest myself, and I will challenge him.”
The ADC's ranks reportedly include prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Senate President David Mark, among others.
Dalung dismissed concerns that the party might fracture due to its many high-profile members, asserting that leaders have already agreed on a common objective and a transparent process for selecting a flagbearer.
“We are going to conduct a transparent primary. Whoever emerges from that process will be fully supported by all of us to challenge Tinubu,” he said, emphasizing that the mission is a collective party effort, not centered on one candidate.
While the ruling All Progressives Congress has downplayed the ADC’s threat, Dalung maintained that opposition unity would be the decisive factor in the 2027 contest.
