Goodbye to Stickers: UK Rolls Out Fully Digital Visas for Nigerians Starting February 25

British High Commission announces transition to eVisa system, promising faster processing, enhanced security, and easier online management

The United Kingdom has announced a significant modernization of its visa system for Nigerian travelers, with all new visit visas to be issued digitally starting February 25, 2026.

The transition, confirmed Monday in a statement by the British High Commission in Abuja, replaces the traditional vignette stickers previously affixed to passports with a fully electronic visa (eVisa) accessible through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.

What Changes—and What Doesn't

According to Onyinye Madu, Senior Press and Public Affairs Officer at the High Commission, the application process remains largely unchanged. Nigerian applicants will continue to:

- Apply online through standard channels
- Attend a Visa Application Centre to provide biometric information
- Meet all existing eligibility criteria

"The only change is the visa format: travellers will now access their visa digitally through a UKVI account," Madu explained.

Benefits for Travelers

The digital transition promises multiple advantages for Nigerian visa applicants:

- Faster passport return: No more waiting for physical stickers to be affixed
- Simplified management: Immigration status can be updated and accessed online
- Enhanced security: Digital visas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with
- Convenience: eVisa access through a free UKVI account

Official Welcome

British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill Lever OBE, welcomed the development as part of broader efforts to strengthen UK-Nigeria ties.

"We are committed to making it easier for Nigerians to travel to the UK," Lever said. "This move to digital visas will streamline a key part of the visa process, making it more secure while reducing dependence on paper documents. We look forward to continuing to welcome Nigerian visitors, students and workers to the UK."

What Existing Visa Holders Need to Know

Nigerians who already hold valid vignette stickers do not need to take any action. Their existing visas remain valid until expiration or until replacement is required.

How to Access the eVisa

Once approved, applicants will need to create a free UKVI account to access their eVisa. Detailed information on applying for UK visas and the eVisa system is available at:

The transition represents the latest step in the UK's broader push toward a fully digital border system, bringing Nigeria in line with other countries where the eVisa system has already been implemented. For Nigerian travelers, it means one less thing to worry about losing—and one more reason to keep their phones charged.
