Governor Fubara Dissolves Rivers State Executive Council

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved the State Executive Council with immediate effect, ordering all commissioners and special advisers to vacate their positions.

The directive was contained in a statement issued Thursday evening by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi. All political appointees affected by the dissolution are instructed to hand over to permanent secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries .

Governor Fubara expressed appreciation to the outgoing cabinet members for their service to the state and wished them well in their future endeavours .

Truce Takes Shape

The dissolution comes 48 hours after Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu had brokered a reconciliation meeting between the feuding political allies .

Wike disclosed that the closed-door session held at the Presidential Villa on Monday, February 9, brought together key Rivers State stakeholders in a renewed push to end the protracted political crisis that has paralysed governance in the oil-rich state for nearly two years.

"This is the second time the President is intervening and believe by the grace of God, this is going to be the last time," Wike told journalists on Tuesday after inspecting projects in Abuja. "I have told the assembly to do the needful and obey Mr. President, which I know they will not hesitate" .

Path to Cabinet Reconstitution

Sources indicate the cabinet dissolution is a strategic precursor to the nomination of a fresh set of commissioners. Following the Villa peace accord, the Rivers State House of Assembly—previously at loggerheads with the governor—has formally agreed to screen and confirm new nominees .

The development marks the most significant de-escalation since the political feud erupted shortly after the 2023 elections. The crisis, rooted in a power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor Wike, has witnessed multiple impeachment attempts, legislative paralysis, mass resignations, and a period of emergency rule in 2025 .

Observers interpret the governor's decisive action as a demonstration of commitment to the Aso Rock-brokered peace deal. Whether this translates into lasting stability for Rivers State will depend on the speed of cabinet reconstitution and the willingness of all parties to sustain the fragile truce.
