An Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese village of al-Tiri killed one person on Thursday, according to Lebanon's health ministry, marking the latest violation of a November 2024 ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Israeli military confirmed it carried out the strike, stating it targeted and killed a "Hezbollah terrorist" operating in the area.
Truce Under Strain
The November 2024 truce was intended to end more than a year of hostilities, including two months of all-out war between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group. However, Israel has continued to conduct regular strikes on Lebanese territory and maintains troop presence in five areas it deems strategically significant.
Lebanon's army announced in January that it had completed the first phase of a planned disarmament of Hezbollah forces south of the Litani River—approximately 30 kilometres from the Israeli border. The Lebanese government is scheduled to meet Monday to review progress on the military's broader disarmament initiative.
Conflicting Positions
Israel has repeatedly criticised the Lebanese army's efforts as insufficient, accusing Hezbollah of rearming in violation of the ceasefire terms. Hezbollah, for its part, has rejected calls to surrender its weapons, maintaining its armed status as a deterrent against Israeli aggression.
Al-Tiri, the site of Thursday's strike, lies south of the Litani River within the area designated for Hezbollah's disarmament under the terms of the truce.
