Abidemi Emmanuel in custody as detailed TikTok testimony exposes alleged N140,000 'UK brand' trap, digital blackmail, and knife-point assault in Ajao Estate
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Abidemi Emmanuel, in connection with the alleged rape of popular content creator Fems Thrift and her friend, following a viral social media outcry that forced authorities to act.
Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the arrest on Friday, stating that Emmanuel is currently in custody and that investigations are ongoing at the command's Gender Unit—a specialized division dedicated to handling sexual and gender-based violence cases .
"The case is being handled in line with global best practices for sexual and gender-based violence investigations, ensuring the protection, dignity, and welfare of the survivors," Adebisi said. She added that the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation .
The Trap: How a 'UK Brand' Pitch Turned Deadly
The case first came to public attention through a harrowing TikTok video posted by Fems, a Lagos-based thrift vendor and content creator, in which she detailed the events of February 8, 2026 .
According to her account, a man using the name Araromi Emmanuel contacted her on Instagram on February 1, claiming he had recently returned from the United Kingdom to launch an international fashion brand in Nigeria . He offered her N140,000 for a modelling assignment and requested that she leverage her social media influence to promote the brand. He assured her that a full production team, including a make-up artist, would be present at the shoot .
Sensing potential risk, Fems took what she believed to be adequate precautions. "My friend was already with me, so she accompanied me for safety," she explained in the video .
Inside the Ajao Estate Apartment
The women arrived at the Ajao Estate location around 11 a.m., but instead of a bustling production set, they found an apartment that was largely empty . The suspect reportedly told them the location was a content creation space and that the make-up artist had stepped out briefly. He then asked Fems to take a shower before filming, claiming her skin was too oily for the shoot, and provided her with a robe .
After she complied, the situation escalated rapidly. The man entered the room with a key under the guise of showing them how to lock the door for safety before other crew members arrived. Instead, he locked the door, stood in a corner, and brandished a knife .
"He locked the door, stood in a corner, and I became scared," Fems recounted .
The suspect allegedly ordered both women to undress, tied their hands with socks, and threatened to stab them if they resisted. "He sexually assaulted us multiple times without protection," she alleged .
Digital Exploitation and Blackmail
The alleged crimes extended beyond physical assault to calculated psychological terror and digital exploitation. Before releasing them between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. that afternoon, the suspect reportedly seized their phones and forced them to unlock private folders containing intimate photographs and videos .
He transferred these files to his own device via AirDrop—a permanent record of their most private moments now in the hands of their attacker . The final threat was calibrated for maximum control.
"He threatened me with my internet presence, saying if I spoke up, he would release my private videos now and in the future," Fems said .
A Predator Exposed
Following Fems' viral testimony, social media users mobilized rapidly, circulating photographs of the alleged perpetrator and tagging police accounts relentlessly . The public pressure proved effective.
A commenter identifying as a former classmate alleged that Emmanuel had a history of predatory behaviour dating back to secondary school. According to the account, he was expelled after sneaking into girls' hostels and had previously attempted to hack classmates' Snapchat accounts, demanding passwords under duress . If accurate, the claims suggest a pattern of targeting women's digital lives—a disturbing continuity with the alleged February 8 assault.
From Silence to Justice
The Lagos State Police Command initially stated on February 11 that no formal complaint had been filed, with efforts ongoing to reach the survivors . However, the viral outcry accelerated the process, leading to Emmanuel's arrest and transfer to the Gender Unit for investigation .
A Warning to Creatives
The case has cast a harsh light on the vulnerabilities embedded in Nigeria's booming influencer economy, where young women routinely receive unsolicited offers of collaboration from strangers. The line between opportunity and danger is often invisible—until it is crossed.
Advocacy groups have used the moment to issue fresh warnings: verify job offers, insist on public meeting spaces, share location data with trusted contacts, and never ignore the instinct that something is wrong .
But as Fems' testimony makes painfully clear, even the most careful precautions can fail when confronted with a predator who has studied the script.
The Road to Justice
As of Saturday, Abidemi Emmanuel remains in police custody at the Lagos State Command's Gender Unit . Prosecution will follow upon conclusion of the investigation.
For Fems Thrift, the decision to speak publicly was itself an act of defiance—a refusal to be silenced by the threats that still hang over her. Her video, now viewed by hundreds of thousands, named the danger, named the method, and demanded that others see what she did not see in time.
Her attacker, if the allegations are true, still possesses intimate images of her and her friend. He still holds that power. She chose to fight it with the only weapon available: the truth.
And in an industry built on image and influence, Fems has used her platform not to sell products, but to demand justice—and in doing so, may have saved countless other young women from walking into the same trap.
