LAWMA Worker Injured as Truck Loses Control on Lagos Bridge

A Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) worker narrowly escaped death on Friday after a containerised truck lost control and knocked him down near the Offin Canal area along the Eko Bridge corridor in Lagos.

The incident occurred in the morning while the worker, identified as Baba Ibeji, was carrying out refuse evacuation duties at Oja junction. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck was descending the CMS Bridge when it suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control.

The vehicle hit the LAWMA operative before crashing into a Toyota Camry with registration number FST 417 FS. LASTMA officers at the scene rescued the injured worker from under the truck and rushed him to a hospital. He was initially rejected due to the severity of his injuries but was later transferred to the General Hospital for further treatment.

The truck driver fled the scene, but his assistant was arrested and handed over to the Ebute-Ero Police Division for investigation.

Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, condemned the reckless driving and ordered a full investigation. He praised the prompt response of LASTMA and emergency responders, noting that their actions prevented a fatality. Giwa also reaffirmed the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving, especially by articulated vehicle operators.

LASTMA has urged all motorists, particularly truck drivers, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to obey speed limits to prevent similar accidents.
