A devastating series of shootings at a secondary school and a nearby residence in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left nine people dead and at least 25 others injured. The suspected attacker was also found deceased at the school.
The Attack
The violence unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Police responding to an active shooter call found six victims dead inside the school. A seventh victim died while being transported to the hospital. The body of the suspected attacker was also discovered on the school premises with what officials described as a self-inflicted injury.
In a separate but connected incident, two more deceased individuals were found at a residence in the small community. Police believe the two scenes are linked but have not yet detailed the connection or the relationships between the victims and the attacker.
An emergency alert sent to residents during the incident described the suspect as a "female in a dress with brown hair." Authorities have confirmed they know the attacker's identity but have not released the name or confirmed the gender publicly.
Community and Response
Tumbler Ridge, a close-knit community of roughly 2,400 people located about 750 miles north of Vancouver, was placed under a shelter-in-place order for hours. The order has since been lifted.
Darian Quist, a Grade 12 student at the school, described barricading a classroom door with tables with his classmates for over two hours until police escorted them to safety. "We got tables and barricaded the doors," he told CBC.
British Columbia's Premier, David Eby, expressed profound grief, stating the "devastating tragedy was prevented from being significantly worse" due to the swift police response, which occurred within two minutes of the first emergency call.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "devastated" by the "horrific shootings" and canceled his planned trip to the Munich Security Conference. Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre also offered condolences to the grieving community.
Context and Aftermath
This incident ranks among the deadliest mass shootings in modern Canadian history. Canada maintains significantly stricter gun control laws than the United States, making such events far less frequent.
