Nigeria has maintained its status as Africa's largest crude oil producer, recording an output of 1.45 million barrels per day in January 2026, according to the latest monthly report from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
The figure represents a marginal increase from December 2025's production of 1.42 million bpd but still falls short of the country's OPEC quota of 1.5 million bpd by approximately 50,000 barrels.
Dual Reporting Sources Show Slight Variations
OPEC's data, derived from direct communication with Nigerian authorities, indicated a 2.11 percent month-on-month increase. However, secondary sources—including energy intelligence platforms—placed Nigeria's January output slightly higher at 1.47 million bpd, representing a 1.34 percent decline from December 2025.
The oil cartel relies on both reporting mechanisms to verify production figures from member countries.
Continental Ranking and Output Gap
Libya followed closely as the continent's second-largest producer with 1.37 million bpd, maintaining pressure on Nigeria's top position. The persistent gap between Nigeria's actual output and its assigned quota underscores ongoing challenges in the country's oil sector, including production disruptions and infrastructure constraints.
Minister Cites Higher Figures Including Condensates
On February 10, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri offered a more optimistic assessment, stating that Nigeria's total oil output—including condensates—currently stands at 1.75 million bpd. Condensates are not counted toward OPEC quota calculations, which may explain the discrepancy between ministerial and cartel figures.
Implications for National Budget
Nigeria's inability to consistently meet its OPEC quota carries significant revenue implications, particularly as the federal government relies heavily on oil earnings to fund annual budgets. The country has struggled for years to ramp up production to pre-2020 levels due to theft, pipeline vandalism, and underinvestment in the sector.
