The Nigerian community in South Africa is mourning the killing of a compatriot, Emeka Uzor, who was shot dead on Sunday afternoon in Johannesburg.
According to the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), the incident occurred around 3 p.m. at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg. Uzor, a native of Nkerefi in Enugu State, was inside his vehicle when he was attacked.
In a statement released on Monday, NUSA President Smart Nwobi and National Publicity Secretary Akindele Olunloyo described the killing as part of a disturbing trend of violence targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
The union has called on South African authorities, including the Police Minister and National Police Commissioner, to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure the perpetrators are prosecuted.
NUSA also urged the Nigerian government, through its Consul General and High Commissioner in South Africa, to engage diplomatically with South African officials on the matter.
While expressing confidence in the South African justice system, the union appealed for calm among Nigerians in the country and assured that it is working with relevant authorities to seek justice for the victim.
